Devices join a network knowing nothing and leave configured (address, mask, gateway, DNS) thanks to a four-step broadcast conversation: Discover, Offer, Request, Acknowledge. The result is a lease with an expiry date, which is why “have you tried rebooting it” genuinely fixes address conflicts.
