Spanning Tree Protocol

Wire three switches in a triangle and a single broadcast frame will circulate forever, multiplying until the network melts: the infamous broadcast storm. STP prevents it by electing a root switch and deliberately blocking one link: still redundant if something fails, never a loop while everything works.

redundancy without the meltdown

You’ll learn to read the tree, and why an intern plugging both ends of a cable into the same switch once took down an airline.
